Tracing Embodiment in Drawings and Dances | Iva Gueorguieva

20 January – 23 March 2024 (closed 16 – 24 February)

During the exhibition Tracing Embodiment in Drawings and Dance alongside a selection of recent drawings and paintings, two new, not earlier shown dance films are presented at the basement of the gallery.

Painting (Iva Gueorguieva), dance performance (Gretchen Ackerman and Friidom ), and sound (Matt McGarvey) merge during Intersection, a site-specific project dedicated to exploring the interconnectivity of these media. The goal is to construct a non-hierarchical entwinement of these traditionally separate mediums. The entwinement prioritizes sensation, embodiment, and synesthesia. The artists rely on improvisation, play, and dialoguing, and the let’s-say-“tactile” intertwining of one’s physical being with the spatio-temporal fabric in which one exists. The sound is produced and performed by Matt McGarvey.

Iva Gueorguieva (b. 1974, Bulgaria) received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2000. Based in Los Angeles, Gueorguieva had a two-person show with New York-based painter, Dona Nelson at Sophia Contemporary, London in 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include Frederic Snitzer, Miami, FL; Ameringer/McEnery/Yohe, New York, NY; ACME, Los Angeles, CA; Samson Projects, Boston, MA; Galerie Stefan Roepke, Cologne, Germany ; Stichting outLINE, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2008); and Pomona Museum of Art, Claremont, CA (2007).

Her work is held in public collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach, CA; Art, Design and Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA; and Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, CA.

Iva Gueorguieva was a finalist for the Howard Foundation Grant in 2019 and was nominated for the Anonymous is a Woman grant in 2017. She is the recipient of the Orange County Contemporary Art Collectors Fellowship for 2012, the California Community Foundation mid-career fellowship for 2010, and the Pollock-Krasner Grant for 2006.
